A RARE 9mm (PARA) DREYSE MODEL M11 SEMI-AUTOMATIC SERVICE-PISTOL, serial no. 11561,
circa 1915, with 5 1/4in. barrel concealed within the lower half of receiver, direct blow-back mechanism, the top of receiver unlocking and hinging to bypass recoil spring, side ejection port, milled panels above the blued frame, chequered hard rubber grips, the tops embossed with the 'R.M.F.' monogram for Rheinische Metallwaaren & Maschinenfabrik (small amount of worm to right hand grip), detachable magazine (with the serial number, the pistol itself not numbered) and lanyard ring at heel, much original finish remaining
Provenance: With Germany's desperate need for 9mm pistols at the start of World War One, the German Military turned to Rheinische Metallwaaren in Sommerda for help. Designs for the M11 had been laid down in 1911, but actual production pistols were not forthcoming until 1914. The German military were initially very enthusiastic, and placed an order for 2000 units, but the complicated mechanism meant production was slow and only around 500 were delivered. The rigors of warfare and the power of the 9mm Parabellum cartridge on the unlocked blow-back action meant attrition rates were high
